Review: A Stitch in Time at Hampton Court Palace

Saturday 29 April to Monday 1 May 2006

Members of the Guild braved rather low temperatures and a chilly wind to celebrate our centenary in this major stitching event at Hampton Court Palace over the first May bank holiday weekend this year. Spirits were kept high and a good time was had by all who took part, particularly those that made new and got the chance to catch up with old friends.

Visitors were intrigued by what was going on, and those stitching were delighted to explain what they were doing and in some cases give visitors the chance to have a go themselves.

Based at the Palace itself (since 1979), the Embroiderers' Guild was established in 1906 by 16 graduates of the Royal School of Art Needlework to "deal entirely with embroidery, and with the first object of keeping up a high standard of work and design". Also a leading educational charity, the Guild is a registered museum that boasts a unique collection of over 11,000 items, and offers a vibrant exhibitions and events programme, a specialist bookshop and library, and much more.

The Guild was also happy to be able to display some historical embroideries from its museum collection in their centre, also based at the Palace, and visitors were glad to be able to see these embroideries as well as get the chance to browse the Guild's specialist Bookshop.
