The critically acclaimed art of the STITCH & SCHOLAR was shown at The Hub: National Centre for Craft & Design, Sleaford July/August 2006, and Williamson Art Gallery and Museum, Birkenhead, September/November 2006, following a successful showing at the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol including a visit from the Patron of the Embroiderers' Guild HRH The Duchess of Gloucester.
"So very cool" The Times, 13 May 2006
"Embroidery is ... the new black" Bristol Metro, 18 May 2006 (Five Star rating)
"Absolutely exquisite. Inspiring. Intriguing - wonderful!" RWA visitor
art of the STITCH is the Embroiderers' Guild's major open international biennial exhibition featuring work stitched or derived from stitch, presented in association with Coats Crafts UK. Out of 453 submissions by 311 artists from 21 countries, 50 works were chosen for art of the STITCH 2006. Selected by a panel made up of representatives from the arts and business world, the exhibition represents 42 artists from 10 countries, including Australia, the USA and the Netherlands.
From Mark Beecroft's interwoven studio stools to Mary Cozens-Walker's domestic stitched scroll, Colin Jenkins' muscular forms to Alice Kettle's angels and the 'obsessive telephone pad quality' of Tilleke Schwarz, this exhibition promises something for every visitor, presenting a wide range of work from the traditional to the unexpected. As exhibition selector Kate Lynch, artist and Royal West of England Academician said:
"The breadth of original, innovative, contemporary embroidery represented is inspiring. The artists in this show redefine embroidery as a potent expressive medium, from emotive graphic expression, raw colour abstraction and tactile lyrical poetry, through to conceptual statements and three dimensional spatial forms."
Whilst Stephen Sheard of Coats Crafts UK, Exhibition Sponsor was impressed by the variety of materials used and commented:
"The boundaries of what constitutes 'inspiration from stitch' are spreading with the use of new materials and media. Coats Crafts UK is proud to be a partner in this exhibition which is leading the way and setting the standard for excellence."
Congratulations go to the recipients of the Anchor Awards, presented by Coats Crafts UK, who are: Riitta-Liisa Haavisto for "Summer Girl" (Anchor Award for most outstanding exhibit), Ton of Holland for "Family" (Anchor International Award), Colin Jenkins for "Purge" (Anchor Innovation Award) and Viv Scott for "Metal Trunk Reworked" (Anchor Student Award).
Accompanying art of the STITCH in 2006 was SCHOLAR, an exhibition celebrating the achievement of Embroiderers' Guild Scholars during the lifetime of art of the STITCH, featuring some of the best talent in the crafts world today.
