Uzbekistan: Central Asia & 'The Golden Road to Samarkand'

To travel with Raisa Gareeva is to touch, feel and experience the heart of Central Asia. An Uzbek of Russian Tartar origin, she is a gem to travel with and a journey with her provides a rare opportunity to explore this rich culture and meet many enterprising craftsmen. Today Uzbekistan is a young nation situated between the Caspian Sea and Western China, a melting pot of many different ethnic group and by far the most diverse in Central Asia. We will journey along the ancient Silk Road with its fascinating history to the major oasis cities associated with Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan and Tamerlane. Our trip begins in Tashkent, capital of Uzbekistan. Continue to the old walled town of Khiva with its unique architecture and on to magnificent Bukhara with mosques and sky high minarets.

Continue along the Royal Road to legendary Samarkand that once saw camel caravans laden with silks and spices, its magnificent architecture depicting turquoise blue domes and exquisite Islamic tile work. Throughout we explore its inspiring cultural and architectural inheritance, visiting museums and important archaeological and historic sites. We will wander through bustling Central Asian markets where women still wear traditional dress, meet artisans in their homes and workshops who produce superb textiles and crafts. Our visits include suzani embroiderers, papermakers, gold thread embroiderers, jewellers, carpet weavers, carvers, ceramicists , natural dyers and weavers of silk and ikat and an opportunity for a hands-on suzani embroidery workshop.
