Embroiderers' Guild Tours 2012

Mexico: Folk Arts, Crafts and Fiestas of Oaxaca & Chiapas

13 - 29 January, 2012 (17 days)

Join us in exploring the unique culture of the Central Valleys of Oaxaca and the highlands of Chiapas. Our journey begins in Oaxaca where we explore the museums, crafts, folk arts and traditional life of the Central Valleys, with excursions to Indian villages in the Mixtec mountains. Wander through colourful weekly markets where the Zapotec Indian people and other regional ethnic groups wear distinctive traditional dress. Traditions and customs of the villages are still strong and we are welcomed into the homes and workshops of potters and ceramic artists, weavers and dyers, woodcarvers, candlemakers, embroiderers and papermakers. Visit the archaeological site of Monte Alban. Continue into the highlands of Chiapas, Mexico’s most southern state where we base ourselves in the colonial city of San Cristobal de Las Casas surrounded by villages inhabited by descendants of the Mayan people. Drive towards the Guatemalan frontier and into the Maya Lacandon jungle area to the ancient Mayan city of Bonampak. Attend a fiesta and a saint day celebration!
