We begin our journey in the visually exciting holy city of Amritsar with a visit the Sikhs' Golden Temple. Drive through the Punjab and into the stunning landscape of the foothills of the Western Himalaya. Our destination is the small hillstation of McLeod Ganj, situated above Dharamsala and home to the Dalai Lama and a large Tibetan community. Here our visits include the Dalai Lama's main temple and the Norbulingka Institute, a training centre for the preservation of Tibetan culture and crafts, offering countless opportunities for sketching and painting. Continue to Basunti, our lakeside retreat with far reaching views of the snow-clad Himalayan peaks for a very personal home stay. Here we have a relaxed opportunity to paint and sketch the landscape, local village life and people, exotic flowers, abundant birdlife and ancient temples. As well as our painting sessions there is the chance to enjoy informal yoga each morning, birdwatch, canoe or take jungle walks. Day train to Delhi and on to Rishikesh, one of India's most holy Hindu pilgrimage sites situated on the banks of the River Ganges where sages, sadhus (wandering holy men) and pilgrims have come to for centuries on their journey into the mountains and to the source of the holy Ganges. This trip focuses on painting and is suitable for both novices and experienced artists and would be of interest to those whose passion is photography.
