Join Lesley Robin on an exciting tour to China and discover its ancient cultural heritage and crafts. Our journey begins in Beijing, capital city of the People's Republic of China where we visit the Great Wall and the Forbidden City, the seat of Imperial power during the Ming and Qing dynasties. An overnight train brings us to Xi'an situated on the eastern terminal of the Silk Road and site of the extraordinary Terracotta Warriors, one of the greatest archaeological finds of the 19th century. We will then fly to Guizhou Province and spend several days exploring the area with its Miao Minority villages. Their traditional wooden architecture nestles into the landscape and is surrounded by terraced hillsides with rivers and stunning mountain scenery. The women dress in exquisitely embroidered clothing and embellished headdress which plays an important part in their culture for marriages, ceremonies and festivals.
On to Shanghai, a vibrant and multi-cultural metropolis situated on the Huangpu River. Throughout our travels we visit major sites of historical importance, art galleries, superb museums, villages and wonderful regional markets. China is a country full of contradictions and our exploration of this rich cultural tapestry will take us from 21st century modern cities into the rural countryside where traditional life still remains relatively untouched. Opportunity for a hands-on embroidery workshop. Come with the spirit of adventure with fabulous opportunities for photography.
