This trip explores the unique cultures, crafts and folk arts of the lesser-travelled regions of Chinese Central Asia as we journey the ancient Silk Route. From the capital city of Beijing fly to Xi'an situated on the easternmost terminus of the Silk Road to see the life-sized terracotta warriors. Explore the sparsely settled frontier region of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, formerly known as Chinese Turkestan. Here can be found a concentration of Central Asian national minorities who have preserved their language, culture and traditions. Visit Kashgar for the Great Sunday Bazaar and Hotian located on the old southern Silk Road. Throughout our travels visit the villages and homes of the Uighurs and traditional workshops... pottery, paper making, carpet and felt rug weaving, embroidered and beaded Uighur hats, silk ikat weaving, local minorities markets and regional museums.
Our trip culminates in Suzhou, home to the famous Suzhou art of embroidery. Visit the Suzhou Embroidery Institute and Silk Museum, the Silk Market as well as a half-day introductory workshop with National Arts & Crafts Master Madame Zhang in the exquisite and intricate art of Suzhou Embroidery. This will be held in one of the beautiful gardens of the city and includes "random stitches" and gold work. A trip of a lifetime!

This is a unique opportunity for 8 participants only to study under the guidance of Madame Zhang (pronounced Chung) YuYing, a charming and dainty woman who at the age of 75 says she can never stop having a needle & thread in her hands. Madame Xhang is probably the most renowned embroiderer living in China today.
