Planned and partly prepared by Janet herself, and completed by Jenny Tiramani, Janet's last pupil, no other book exists that is dedicated to the linen clothes that covered the body from the skin outwards. It contains full colour portraits and photographs of details of garments in the explanatory section, as well as patterns for 86 items of linen clothing, which range from men's shirts and women's smocks, from superb ruffs and collars to boot hose and children's stomachers. | Quilts 1700 - 2010: Hidden Histories, Untold Stories NEW!
Sue Pritchard Pub. V&A Publications Price £35.00 hardback
Quilts evoke the past - they stimulate our earliest memories of security and comfort and resonate with historical and cultural references challenging the assumption that stitching is simply 'women's work'. Using stunning new photography, this book explores the personal and social histories which reveal the maker's complex engagement with the wider world. The myths and narratives handed down with each intricately pieced patchwork and stitched whole cloth are as much a part of our heritage as the silks, velvets and cottons which document our textile history. Primary sources, such as inventories, diaries and letters add context to the personal narratives documented by the quilts, exploring responses to marriage, childbirth, love and loss. The book includes contemporary material to show how artists such as Grayson Perry and Tracey Emin respond to the tradition of quilt making.

 | Tapestry in the Renaissance - Art and Magnificence NEW!
The Metroplitan Museum of Art Pub. Yale University Press Price £40.00 hardback
Tapestries were a principal aspect of the ostentatious 'magnificence' used during the Renaissance by powerful religious and secular rulers to broadcast their wealth and might. This sumptuously illustrated book presents the first major survey of tapestry production between 1460 and 1560 and it catalogues the first monographic loan exhibition of tapestries in the United States in twenty-five years. It highlights the finest tapestry cycles of the age as one of the greatest achievements of Renaissance Art. Examples from many of the most important surviving sets - which still dazzle today as they did 500 years ago in the palaces and cathedrals of Europe - illustrate the contribution that the medium made of the Art, liturgy and propaganda of the time. This study focuses on the stylistic evolution of the tapestry design in the Netherlands beginning with the development by Netherlandish designers in the late fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries of an aesthetic that emphasised narrative and decorative qualities. During the 1510s, 1520s and 1530s, commissions by Pope Leo X and other Italian patrons resulted in the despatch of tapestry cartoons by Italian artists - notably Raphael and his assistants - to Brussels, the main center of high-quality production, thus introducing Roman High Renaissance asthetics to Northern Tapestry design. Therafter Netherlands artists like Bernaert van Orley and his followers melded this Italian influence with their local traditions of tapestry design to produce a rich aesthetic that was ideally suited to the medium.

 | The Found Object in Textile Art NEW!
Cas Holmes Pub. Anova Price £19.99 hardback
Textile artists have always used found objects, both for decoration and to imbue their work with meaning, and recently the practice has become even more popular. Cas Holmes is renowned for her use of 'the found', and her many-layered, atmospheric pieces have been shown around the world. The practice differs from recycling in that the objects often remain 'themselves' when they are incorporated into the work. The work is often conceived and built around the found object. The definition 'found object' can include a wide range of objects, from natural materials such as driftwood and leaves to old bits of machinery and vintage fabrics. Mundane objects such as CD cases can be used to create stunning pieces of art, or more sentimental items such as old jewellery can lend deep meaning to a work. This book contains a wealth of techniques and inspiration for incorporating found objects into your textile work. Cas Holmes is one of UK's most renowned textile artists. She exhibits widely and runs courses at West Dean College. She has written for magazines including The Quilter.

Sally Sparks Pub. Out of Hand Price £14.50 paperback
Travelling can be a wonderful source of inspiration , but when those travels entice you to take a walk on the wild side and experience the Antarctic wilderness, it certainly eclipses the usual tourist brochure trips. The wildlife and the colours of the sea, sky, ice and wastelands provided Sally with immediate inspiration, but it was the colours and textures that she found in the rusting, abandoned whaling stations that became an obsession. Using photographs and sketches, she describes the journey that she undertook to develop a body of work that would take her from rust to fabric art. Using a wide variety of materials including embossed handmade papers, fabrics and even handmade nails from her rust collection, Sally translates the qualities of the creased crushed corrugated iron and disintegrateing factories into textiles.
